PostSubject: Utahbeer blog recipe for 2011   Thu Dec 30, 2010 11:31 am

Folks I wanted to start kicking ideas around for a 2011 Utahbeer blog recipe for the brew off. Anybody have any ideas? Something they've wanted to try for a while?

Tasting Ed's fantastic saison's has me itching to give one of those a shot but I'm open to anything.

Ed's Saison was great, but his double really got me thinking. Why not a Trappist inspired beer, we have enough time. We could also just flood a weird category, like Cider or something. Whatever... just thinking out loud.

Also, there is still about half a case of the Chipotle stout that I made last year if anyone wants to try it.

I'd certainly be up for trying a tripel out. And I'd love to do a cider as well.

Looking through Mikey's list reminds me that I'd like to do a Dunkel too.

Stickealt eah? I've never had the pleasure of enjoying one. As for your suggestions Kent, Tripel sounds great, Dunkel sounds good also. As for Cider, I've made a few of them before and they have all sucked. I picked up a book on cider brewing about a year and a half ago and haven't brewed a single Cider since. I have plans this fall, as I have a giant apple tree in my back yard. Til then, you're welcome to read my Cider book if you want to give it a spin. I have a super secret cider plan in the works, but I can't make it 'til the fall.

Stickealt: http://www.germanbeerinstitute.com/Sticke_Alt.html

It's basically a big alt. Also, red rock's latzenbier is basically the same thing as far as I am aware. It's actually what inspired me to try. Not too many ideas where to start though. Just a few google searches. We'll se what happens.

Sounds like an interesting style to try. It's been a good 6 years since German class in College, so I have an excuse for not knowing what "Sticke" was. But a beer called Secret Old is right up my alley.

Damn link is blocked here at the office. I'll peek at it tonight. I'm up for trying anything. Anyone have some example recipes as a starting point on these?

styles:
Sticke
Tripel
Cider

Any others?

For the Cider, here is a recipe. Get a bottle of Tree Top and toss in some of that "Spike My Juice" stuff, done! For Tripel, wear a cool cloak and be celibate, pray for 12 hours a day and let it just happen. For the Sticke, make a normal Alt and add 3lbs of corn sugar and act like you know what your doing. Sound good?

Well, I'm already ace at the 'celibate' part; I just need to find a cloak?

They made the announcement a couple of days ago, Aug. 20th is the date. So, 7 months or so. Not enough time to brew a doble-doble, and too much time for a mild... so, there ya go. I've helped trim down our options.

P.S. Dallas, if you're reading this, I wanna talk to you about your wonderful mead.

Ricky, what would you like to know about the mead? If I were to vote on a beer to brew for the blog recipe, it would be a Saison. I also like the idea of a Dunkle.

Dallas,

I just wanted to let you know how much it was enjoyed! It was very light and seemed to be a mead that should be enjoyed with a meal. The sweetness was in a very good balance and the honey showed through very well. I am wondering if you wanted to go to a mead makers meeting. A friend of mine hosts it who have been brewing mead for about a decade and a half. It is the first Tuesday of every month in Farmington, so tomorrow. If you can show up give me a call, (801) 725-3978. It is usually about 6 pm or so.

Also, you should enter the Mazer World Cup (http://www.mazercup.com/). It is the biggest mead comp. in the world. Check it out, I just sent in a couple meads.

Talk to you soon,

---Ricky H.
